Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi on Thursday reviewed the prevailing security situation in the state with the top brass of the state government and senior police, security and civil administration officers.

The visit to take stock of the situation takes place in the backdrop of violence, rise in militancy-related incidents and students’ protests. The Home Secretary had detailed meetings with senior police, security, intelligence and civil administration officers soon after his arrival here on Thursday morning.

In his meeting with Mufti, the Home Secretary discussed the overall situation prevailing in the state.

The visit comes a day after suspected militants killed a young Kashmiri Army officer, Lt Umar Fayaz, in Shopian district of south Kashmir. This is his first visit to the Valley after the seat of government shifted from Jammu to Srinagar.

The Valley witnessed violence during the bypoll to Srinagar parliamentary constituency on April 9 in which at least nine civilians were killed and several others injured. In view of the situation, the bypoll to Anantnag constituency scheduled for April 12 was postponed to May 25. However, in view of the continued trouble and demand of the ruling PDP the bypoll has been cancelled.

The administration is also faced with the students’ protests in different parts of the Valley continuing intermittently for the fourth week now, following the trouble at Government Degree College, Pulwama, on April 15.
