The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD), which had initiated the agitation for a separate state of Uttarakhand in nineties, has demanded Gairsain as the permanent capital of the state and renamed Chandra Nagar.

“We have launched a 15-day awareness drive to sensitise people about the importance of the proposed permanent capital at Gairsain,” top UKD leader KS Airy said here today. He added ‘Uttarakhand Bachao, Uttarakhand Banao’ would be the slogan of the party during the campaign.

Airy also announced a protest programme of the party over the Gairsain issue. “We have decided to gherao the state Assembly during the session scheduled at Gairsain in the coming months to remind the government that Gairsain be announced as the permanent capital of the state and renamed after freedom fighter Chandra Singh Garhwali,” he said.

The UKD leader said thousands of party members had been asked to take part in the agitation on the scheduled dates. He also asked the BJP to clear its position on making Gairsain as permanent capital. “Until the parties come clear on the subject, the mission of making Gairsain as permanent capital will not be complete. The parties will continue to play with the feelings of the people on the issue,” he said.
