Eminent santoor exponent Pandit Bhajan Sopori enchanted the audience during the programmes organised by SPICMACAY at Sat Paul Mittal School and Delhi Public School.

He acquainted students with classical music and got them to sing the initial ragas along while he played the santoor. He played the instrument to perfection, drawing applause from young students several times during the performance.

He was accompanied with his protégé Veethika Tikoo on the santoor and Mithilesh Kumar Jha on the tabla.

Introducing raag Basant Mukhari to students, he said all students inherently have a vibration of classical music and that they just need to learn to express it.

Even half an hour of practice would help them in going a long way in learning classical music, he said. He told them that they should not hesitate in learning and should gain as much knowledge as they can. It would reflect in their personality, he said. At this age, he was learning computer from his grandson, he added. He said riaz (practice) for music was a must for a musician, as it helped in getting clarity of vision and also in keeping physically fit.

Students were enthused during the performance and asked him many questions about music. A number of students gathered around him and took his autographs. Some students also clicked selfies with him.

“It was a wonderful performance and I was thrilled to see how fast and rhythmically Pandit Bhajan ji played the santoor,” Simran, a Class VI student, said.

Another student Mehramat said she had a great time during the performance.

“I listened to santoor for the first time. It was an excellent one. I even got an autograph signed from him and will start learning classical music,” another student said.
