The Language and Culture Department organised a seminar and kavi sammelan at the Dev Sadan here today. This was disclosed by District Language Officer (DLO) Promila Guleria. She said the theme of the seminar was “Birshu”, a rural fair celebrated in most of the villages of the valley during Chaitra and Baisakh.
The villagers worship the village deity to seek blessings and an oracle is believed to predict the yearly forecast in divine trance, locally known as “khel” or “ubharna”.
Octogenarian and an eminent litterateur and poet, Naval Kishore Thakur, who was the chief guest on the occasion, inaugurated the seminar by lighting a lamp. Reputed litterateur and historian Chhering Dorje presided over the seminar.
The programme commenced with folk songs of Birshu followed by detailed narrative of Birshu by eminent literary scholars. Later, a kavi sammelan was held during which compositions in Hindi and Pahari language were recited by various poets and scholars. The DLO thanked all the participants of the seminar and appealed to show such enthusiasm in future events to be held by the department for promotion of language and culture of the hill state.
