Flight operations suspended at Mohali international airport
The international airport at Mohali wore a deserted look due to suspension of all flights on Sunday. The repair work of the runway is going on here. It was the third time in the past one month when the airport remained closed for the entire day for the repair of the runway. Usually, the airport witnesses a total of 36 flights that take off and land here daily. Earlier, the operations were suspended on March 19 and April 2 (all Sundays) and before that the airport had remained closed to all flights after 1 pm on the first and third Sundays of every month. A senior officer of the airport said, the decision of closing down the airport was taken by the Airport Authority of India.According to sources, the repair of the runway was on to upgrade the aircraft landing system here. “All the flight operations will start at the airport from tomorrow”, said the sources. Mystery shrouds man’s death at Sector 25
Chandigarh: A man was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his car at Sector 25 on Sunday night. Sources said people noticed the man lying unconscious in an Etios car, following which the police were informed. A police team rushed the spot and took him out by breaking open the windowpane of the car. The victim was rushed to the GMSH, Sector 16, where doctors declared him brought dead. Police officials said an investigation had been initiated. Sources said the victim had been identified as Lovepreet of Sector 49. The police said residents claimed that the car was parked in the parking from the past few hours. The air-conditioner of the car was on when the victim was brought out of the vehicle. Police sources said there were several missed calls on the victim’s cellphone. The SHO of Sector 11 police station also reached the spot. TNS
Over 900 persons benefit from socio-medical camp
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Association organised a socio medical camp at Government Model High School, Vikasnagar, on Sunday morning in collaboration with various departments of the administration. Parimal Rai, Adviser to Administrator, was the chief guest on the occasion. He interacted with beneficiaries and hailed the efforts made by the association. This was the fourth camp organised every year during April to commemorate the memory of Vaishnav, president of the association and former chief secretary of Punjab. As many as 955 persons were benefitted from the dedicated service rendered by over 60 service providers. Sahayta Cancer Sahyog and Kalgidhar Trust spread awareness about cancer and de-addiction, respectively. TNS
Fire breaks out at paper factory, no casualty
Lalru: A major fire broke out at Pragati paper factory at Handesera here on Sunday. Though no casualty was reported, goods worth lakhs of rupees had been destroyed. According to fire department officials, they got information that a fire broke out at Pragati paper factory around 3.22 pm, following which three fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Sources said workers, who were on duty at the factory, saw smoke billowing out of the building. They informed the owner of the factory and the fire brigade about the incident. However, the fire continued to fume as the factory had huge stock of paper materials. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. However, the sources from the factory said the fire broke out due to short-circuit in one of the godowns. The exact loss was yet to be ascertained as the work to control the fire was still on. OC
