The construction of a 1,200-metre irrigation canal originating from the Sharda barrage at Tanakpur will begin soon.
The canal, which will facilitate irrigation in Nepal, will be completed in two years.
The Nepalese part of the canal will be completed by Nepal. Amarjit Singh, Secretary of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Preservation Ministry, Govern-ment of India, stated this here today.
Amarjit Singh told mediapersons after his visit to the canal site that it had been committed by the Government of India at the time of construction of NHPC power station in 1991.
Singh, who reached Champawat to visit the proposed canal site and that of another Indo- Nepal multipurpose project at Pancheswar, said the proposed canal to Nepal will solve irrigation and drinking water problems and will facilitate tourism and fisheries in the neighbouring country.
