Treat for mango lovers at Pinjore Gardens

The two-day 26th Mango Mela, organised jointly by the Haryana Tourism and Horticulture Departments of the state, began at the Yadavindra Gardens, Pinjore, here today.

The Mango Mela was inaugurated by Ram Bilas Sharma, Tourism Minister, Haryana Government, in the presence of Seema Trikha, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Tourism & Hospitality, Haryana, Latika Sharma, Member of Legislative Assembly, Kalka, and Jagdish Chopra, Chairman, Haryana Tourism Corporation.

While speaking on the occasion, the Minister congratulated the Tourism Department, Haryana, for organising the event. The minister said there was a plan to upgrade the Mango Mela to an international level.

The garden wore a festive look as cut-outs and props adorned the mela premises. People enjoyed clicking pictures at the especially created ‘selfie’ points. Drapes in hues of yellow and green on various terraces of the Mughal Gardens lent a perfect look to the mela.

Students from various schools of Pinjore and Panchkula participated in face painting, rangoli and solo dance competitions with enthusiasm. Students also performed on Bollywood, Punjabi and classical songs. Over 140 students took part in these competitions.

The popular “mango-eating competition” had students participating with fervour and enthusiasm. In the evening, artistes from NZCC, Patiala, presented a colourful cultural programme of folk songs, dances of Himachal, Haryana and Punjab.

A total of 4,049 entries were received, out of which 3,848 entries were from Haryana and 201 from others states - Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh.

Out of the total 4,049 entries, 3,534 entries were of different varieties of mangoes and 515 entries were of mango products such as pickle, chutney, jam, juice, squash and mango leather, etc.

Eminent scientists from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, Maharana Pratap Horticultural University, Karnal, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Modipuram, UP, adjudged the entries of various categories.
