Patiala, June 27
In a noble gesture, 75 students of Yadavindra Public School volunteered to refurbish Government Elementary School at Hasanpur village in Patiala.
In an activity held under socially useful productive work (SUPW), the Class XII students and a few NCC cadets from Class X volunteered from June 8 to 22 to complete the task. School teacher Simrat Malhotra was in charge of the programme.
The volunteers engaged themselves in various activities, including washing and cleaning, painting walls and ceilings and helping in digging a borewell in the school.
The students also made teaching aids, charts, rugs and used to bring water from far off places to clean the building.
Four students who had received the International Award for Young People (IAYP), including Nidhi Sachdeva, Prabhpratap Singh, Pulkit Papneja and Harsheen kaur worked consistently with other volunteers.
“It was an enriching experience for all of us. The students were rattled to see the government school in a pitiable condition. They worked hard for its renovation,” said Malhotra.
A mandatory SUPW class was carried out daily for the students. It is a source to inculcate values, including care, compassion, non-violence, self-reliance, dignity of labour, cooperation and helpfulness amongst the young generation, she said.
“I am proud of my students. They have done a commendable job. We are not done yet. The students will go to this school every Sunday to provide necessary assistance. This activity will be carried throughout the year,” said Maj Gen Sanjiv Varma, director, YPS.
