The newly built Sector 39 Sports Complex will house the city’s second all-weather swimming pool, the UT Sports Department officials confirmed here today.

“It has been decided to convert this swimming facility into an all-weather pool. The same has been conveyed to the UT Engineering Department and the work in this regard is likely to start soon,” said Sports Secretary KK Yadav.

The existing all-weather swimming pool at Sector 23 was constructed in 1962.

“The proposal has already been received and the tenders will be floated soon,” said an official from the Engineering Department. “Unlike the Sector 23 pool, we want to set up a compatible plant here which could be easy to repair and clean,” the official pointed.

“Every year, we have to shut the Sector 23 pool for a period of over one month for necessary repairs, cleaning of water tanks and maintenance of the plant. We want to install small machinery here so that the pool will remain open throughout the year,” the official added.

The pool at the Sector 39 Sports Complex, though, is smaller in size than the Sector 23 facility. It will have only four lanes and the depth has been limited to 4.6 feet.

“The department is also planning to build a multipurpose gymnasium hall, equipped with latest machines, at the centre so that the swimmers can undergo weight training here. There is no such facility for the swimmers in any of the existing centres,” said a senior official of the UT Sports Department.
