According to the provisional list for city colleges for centralised first-year courses released on the website of the Higher Education Department, a majority of the commerce toppers have opted for SD College. For the BCom general pool (outside UT), students with the top three percentages (including weightage) — 114, 113.80 and 113.60 — have opted for SD College.

Even in BCom (UT pool), all 21 toppers have opted for SD College with the highest score being 114.58 per cent. The college has a total of 350 seats for BCom. In BBA (UT pool), the top scorer with 95.75 per cent chose the same college. In the BBA general pool (outside UT), all 13 toppers also preferred this college with the highest percentage being 97.80. The college has 120 seats in this course.

For BCA (UT pool), the top score, including weightage, was 116.80 per cent and the topper has preferred DAV College, Sector 10. The second topper with 116.40 per cent preferred SD College, while the third topper with 114 per cent score also chose DAV College. For the outside UT pool in this course, the top scorer (116 per cent) opted for Post Graduate Government College (Co-ed), Sector 11. However, the next four toppers went with SD College.

Dr Bhushan Kumar Sharma, Principal, SD College, said, “Top-ranking students have opted for our college as their first choice for admission. Every year, our seats are filled within no time with the highest cut-offs and this year is no exception. In the general pool for BCom, the student with the highest score of 114 has opted for SD College, while our cut-off is 112.20. The highest score in the UT pool is 114.58 and the topper has again chosen our college while the cut-off for the UT pool in our college is 107.”

In the science streams, the choices of toppers vary. In the BSc (non-medical) UT pool, toppers have opted for the two government colleges in Sector 11 with the top score touching 98.26 per cent. In the outside UT pool category for this course, the top scorer with 97.20 per cent marks opted for MCM DAV College, Sector 36. The next two toppers, with an identical score of 96.80, have preferred the Sector 11 girls’ college.

In the BSc (Medical) UT pool, the top percentage of 96.80 has gone to MCM DAV. In the outside UT pool category, the Sector 11 girls’ college remains in demand with most toppers. Both first and second toppers with 97.33 per cent and 97.20 per cent marks, respectively, have opted for this college. In BSc, the Sector 11 girls’ college has 140 seats, while the Sector 11 co-ed college has 250 seats. All these colleges are affiliated to Panjab University.

BA and MA courses fall under the non-centralised admission category.

How the weightage is calculated

  • For BCom, students are given weightage for having studied maths and a maximum of three commerce subjects. For each subject, four marks are added to the total score of the students with the maximum being 16 marks other than the Class XII marks.
  • In BCA, 10 marks are added for the computer subject and 10 for mathematics. The maximum weightage possible in BCA is 20, besides the Class XII marks.

Guidelines for students

  • The allotment list is purely provisional and is subject to verification of original documents/testimonials by the allotted college at the time of counselling.
  • The applicants have to report at the allotted college from 9 am to 2 pm for verification of original documents and the admission process as per schedule given in the joint prospectus.
