Prof Arun Kumar Grover, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, and Renana Jhabvala, president, SEWA Bharat, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly work towards empowerment of women through a holistic approach of action research in the presence of senior faculty members.
Sunanda Dikshit, coordinator, Punjab SEWA Bharat; and Prof Ramanjit Kaur Johal, from Research Promotion Cell, will be the coordinators of the MoU.
Giving a brief introduction regarding Sewa Bharat, Jhabvala said it was a federation of SEWA organisation in the country and is committed to empowerment of poor women through a holistic approach. “Its work begins with needs and capabilities of women and strives to fulfill the needs which have been identified over the 45 years of SEWA’s existence,” she added.
The objective of this MoU is to establish a framework for cooperative institutional relations to encourage and promote collaboration between parties for better empowerment and social and economic development of women in the state.
Ela Bhatt, Founder of SEWA Bharat, Chancellor, Gujarat Vidyapeeth, and Mahatma Gandhi Chair Professor at the PU, established the foundation for collaboration between these two organisations on her visit to the university in October 2016 when she delivered the Foundation Day lecture.
The PU has been working with SEWA in the past year for youth leadership. Workshops have been conducted by the Anubandh Foundation of SEWA in which 90 students were trained. PU students will be going to SEWA for internships in early 2018. The MoU will further the relationship of the university and SEWA Bharat.
