Play on women empowerment

The Abhinay Theatre Group staged a Hindi play, ‘Aadi Shakti Maa Durga’, on the theme of women empowerment at Tagore Theatre here on Wednesday.

The play structured in Hindu mythological world depicted valour and wisdom of Parvati, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, who is enshrined in holy scriptures as incarnation of many forms of the goddess like Chandi, Durga and more to end oppression against women through various episodes.

The play opened with Durga defeating the ‘devtas’ obsessed with proud before killing demons like Mahishasura, Rakatbeeja and more to maintain the dignity and glory of womanhood.

The play highlighted how exhorted by Shiva the goddess Parvati went for meditation and later acquired the lion as her ‘vahan’.

The artistes attempted to recreate the ambience of the mythological world with costumes by Anuradha, light effects by Jaspal Singh and other theatrical elements.
