For the first time, a rare letter written by Pierre Jeanneret, a colleague of Le Corbusier, has been auctioned in Spain for Rs 37,977 on October 30.
While the auction of heritage furniture created and designed by Pierre Jeanneret is common, this is the first time that his letter has been auctioned by a auction house.
Pierre Jeanneret wrote this letter from Chandigarh on July 18, 1964, in his capacity as the Chief Architect and Town Planning Adviser of the city. Pierre Jeanneret was also the first Chief Architect of Chandigarh.
Pierre Jeanneret wrote the letter to Anthony Krafit (a journalist) of Switzerland for rectifying a mistake in an article of Santosh Ghosh, which was published in French. Santosh mentioned that Gandhi Bhawan in Chandigarh was designed by BP Mathur.
Ajay Jagga, member, Heritage Items Protection Cell, in a letter to UT Advisor Manoj Parida, said Chandigarh was having a huge number of such documents bearing signatures of Jeanneret. Accordingly, all such documents need to protected and preserved as they were considered gold mine and have huge value in the international market under the category of autographs.
