Repair water pipeline to avoid wastage
Joints of cast iron water pipelines passing over a bridge near the PCA stadium at Phase 9, Mohali, are leaking badly and water is being wasted daily. The Mohali Municipal Corporation authorities have neither repaired the leaking joints nor have they replaced the pipelines despite repeated requests. The authorities should start the repair work to avoid wastage of water.

CHB rates unjustified
The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) is purely a public sector undertaking, entrusted upon the task of providing affordable housing facility to the city residents. Latest rates suggested by the board are exorbitantly high and unjustified. The sole focus is on making money and rules are not in favour of the allottees. How can a normal, middle class person afford to shell out crores when the market rates are significantly less in the tricity and its periphery than those proposed by the CHB.

Cow cess totally uncalled for
This is apropos of the news report, ‘Brace for cow cess on power and liquor’, published in these columns on June 27. It is surprising that the UT Administration has given its nod to impose cow cess on the purchase of power, liquor and vehicles in the city. One fails to understand how the amount collected from this cess is going to end the stray cattle menace. Earlier also, many taxes were levied putting a big hole in the pockets of the city residents, but those taxes have never been utilised for the said purpose. The UT Administration must utilise the already collected funds towards various taxes in a judicious manner and it must direct the authorities concerned to tackle the issue of stray cattle menace in an efficient and transparent way.
