Raminder  Singh, who deals in CNG  kits for scooter, said they had started installing these kits on scooters.

The CNG kit for two-wheelers comprises two cylinders of 0.6 kg each, which can run up to 100 or 110  km per kg at an approximate cost of Rs 0.60 per km per single fill. The  expected  cost of the  CNG kit  is around   Rs 15,000.

Raminder said the two-wheeler CNG kits  had been  approved and  certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and  ICAT respectively.

Rajiv Tewari,  Additional  Secretary, STA,  said the administration was  promoting CNG-run transport  vehicles in a big way. He said they were  persuading the auto  owners  to get their vehicles fitted with CNG kits.  They had also given permission for  CNG kits for cars  but permission for retrofitting  centres was  under process, he said.

Meanwhile, Raminder  said installing the two-wheeler CNG kit was a three-hour job. The owners would have the  options of running his scooter either on petrol  or on  CNG.

Rajiv, a  resident, said while this initiative was indeed a step in the right direction, there was  need to increase the number of CNG   stations  in the  city. At present, only one CNG   filling station is functional  in the city. The UT Administration has given its approval for setting up nine more CNG stations. It is promoting the CNG to reduce pollution in the city.
