Chandigarh, December 3
Formed in 2007 by some environmental-friendly and socially-conscious citizens to raise awareness about floral and faunal heritage through various adventure sports activities, CATS (Chandigarh Adventures Treks and Sports) an NGO, organised a walk through the Botanical Gardens in Sarangpur here today.
At the crack of dawn, four specialists from the CATS and the Chandigarh Forest Department led 51 CATS members to impart knowledge about trees planted along various paths of the garden, which has developed 15 botanical sections over 176 acres.
Group member Dr Simmi Waraich and gardener Shiv Sagar spearheaded the sub-groups for the purpose and Forests Conservator Nautiyal led the discussion on the medicinal herbal plants and their usage to maximise health benefits.
The CATS had invited a group of 25 students from Sri Aurobindo School for this walk and the participants thoroughly enjoyed exploring medicinal plants and herbs on 40 acres. One can find more than 75 species of the medicinal trees and 55 species of the medicinal shrubs in the garden. The CATS members pooled in funds to pay for the fee of a girl pursuing D Pharmacy in Chandigarh.
