Mohali, February 3
While GMADA’s move of handing over sports complexes to private players has drawn flak from local residents, the Municipal Corporation (MC), Mohali, has is mulling over taking their charge.
In recently-held MC House meeting, Mohali Mayor announced that the civic body would write to the state government to run affairs of sports complexes.
Earlier, the issue of substantial hike in fee for using facilities at sports complexes by three private players was taken up in a meeting by local councillors. Of the five sports complexes in Mohali, the GMADA has already handed over three to private parties recently.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor Paramjit Singh Kahlon, who took up the issue, said, “Several budding players have stopped going to these sports centres following a fee hike. If GMADA is unable to run the affairs of these sports complexes, the MC should take charge of these centres.”
Echoing similar sentiments, other councillors too came out in support of Kahlon following which Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh announced that a resolution in this regard would be brought in the next House meeting.
“We will also write to the state government for seeking control of the sports complexes,” said the Mayor.
Councillors are also upset as the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has been selling sites in Phase 8, which are being used for sports, recreational activities and public functions.
“We will talk to the GMADA authorities with respect to keeping aside at least one such site, like it was done in the case of Chandigarh’s Parade Ground,” the Mayor added.
