Sasmita, a 15-year-old female zebra, died at Mahendra Chaudhury Zoological Park, commonly known as Chattbir zoo, following cardiac arrest yesterday.

Officials said the lone zebra at the zoo died in the morning. The average life span of a zebra is 25 to 30 years.

A post-mortem of the zebra, conducted by a team of veterinary experts, revealed that the sudden death was caused by internal haemorrhage and cardiac failure probably due to a snakebite.

Tissue and feed ingesta samples of the zebra have been sent for further examination to Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana.

Zoo officials said the female zebra was brought here from Nandankanan Zoological Park, Odisha, on March 14, 2012, and she was born on April 2002 as per the record.
