Despite lacking basic amenities, Teur village in Kharar has shown the way by keeping the population under control. The sarpanch of this village, Baljit Kaur; ANM Harpreet Kaur and her supervisor Raj Kumari were honoured by the Punjab Health Minister at a function in Mohali recently for having the lowest birth rate.
When asked about it, Dr Daler Singh Multani, SMO and in-charge of the Primary Health Centre at Boothgarh, said the village had the lowest birth rate of 11 per 1,000 as compared to 14 of Boothgarh block and 15.4 of Mohali district. “Health workers have worked hard and they should be given more facilities and salary. The panchyats of Teur and nearby villages have also been cooperative and it should be appreciated,” he added.
When ask about it, Baljit Kaur, sarpanch of the village, praised the health workers who, according to her, had done a great job by educating residents of the village about various family welfare programmes. She said though there are many migrant laborers residing in the village, they too are adopting population control methods. ANM Harpreet Kaur said they were working hard to make people aware of ill-effects of increasing population. She said the sub-centre of Teur village also catered to Bhajoli, Abhepur, jakarmajra and Rurki villages.
