A wave of happiness spread across Fazilka’s nondescript Jaimal Singh Wala, the native village of Shubhman Gill, after the budding cricketer was adjudged Man of the Series for his brilliant show in the ICC U-19 World Cup in New Zealand today.
The remote village, which is just 10km away from Indo-Pak border, reveled in Shubman’s success as Didar Singh and his wife Gurmeet Kaur danced with their grandson’s childhood bats in hand. The duo was accompanied by the relatives and villagers.
“It is a moment of pride for the village and the entire district,” said a jubilant Didar Singh.
Going down the memory lane, Didar Singh said: “Shubhman started playing cricket when he was just three years old.
A cricket pitch was set up for his practice in our courtyard.”
Didar Singh also hailed his son Lakhwinder, who along with his family shifted to Mohali about a decade ago to provide a better platform to Shubhman.
