A day after Class IX and X students of Government High School (GHS) at Phase 6 here held a protest against being shifted to the GHS at Phase 5, the authorities on Thursday transferred five teachers, including a head teacher and two Class IV employees, from the school.
Two teachers have been transferred to Fatehgarh Sahib, while two others have been shifted to a rural station near Lalru. The head teacher has been shifted to Government High School, Balongi. All five teachers were looking after senior classes at the GHS, Phase 6.
Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, a teacher said on condition of anonymity that they were summoned to the office of the District Education Officer after the school and handed over their transfer orders.
“It’s nothing less than a ‘Tuglaki diktat’. The authorities are evidently not concerned about the studies of poor children. Nobody asked us (the staff) whether or not there was a need to downgrade the school and what will be the consequences of the development,” said the teacher.
As many as 50 students of Class IX and X of the GHS, Phase 6, were asked to shift to the GHS, Phase 5 on Wednesday. Upset over the development, students and their parents had staged a protest and refused to leave their school.
On Thursday, some teachers of the GHS, Phase 5, arrived at the GHS, Phase 6, with a school bus to pick the students from there.
“However, the students refused to go to their new school and sat in the open in front of their classes. The teachers of the GHS, Phase 5, remained there for an hour, but left after seeing that no student was interested in going with them,” said RP Sharma, area councillor.
Parents of some of the students also reached the spot.
“We fail to understand why the step of shifting our wards to another school has been taken. The authorities have issued orders while sitting in their air-conditioned offices without knowing the ground reality,” said parents.
Despite repeated attempts, Mohali DEO (Secondary) Sharanjit Singh and Secretary (Education), Punjab, Krishan Kumar could not be contacted.
