Though shopkeepers maintained that there was a slump in the market, traffic jams and customer rush in the markets tell a different story. Sweet shops have been abuzz with customers making pre-orders for and buying Diwali sweets.

To lure the customers and increase their sales, shopkeepers are giving exchange offers on ornaments, utensils, mobile phones and refrigerators.

The roadside vendors were also not lagging behind and had decorated their stalls with traditional products.

Cops were seen managing traffic, and many of them had to face problems because people had parked their vehicles haphazardly. A heavy rush was witnessed in the markets since morning that led to congestion on city roads.

Ahead of the Diwali festival, the police have stepped up security across the city, especially, in busy markets. As many 250 police personnel have already been deployed in the markets. Superintendent of Police (SP), City, Varun Sharma, said that security have been already beefed up in the wake of festival season. He said, “over 250 police personnels have been deployed in city markets. We have also set up nakas at each entry and exit points.”

SP Sharma said they had also deployed around 100 police personnel of armed division for the festival to thwart any untoward incident.
