Bus bays to ease traffic snarls

Chandigarh, June 19
The UT traffic police have set up bus bays at two places in Chandigarh to ease the flow of traffic and lessen traffic snarls caused by the buses halting at the intersections. The bus bays have been created at the Housing Board light point and at Tribune Chowk on road towards Zirakpur.
The bay at the Housing Board light point has been created by placing barricades on the road making buses to drive through it to pick passengers. However, there is just a no-parking board kept ahead of Tribune Chowk to prevent the buses from halting near the roundabout that earlier led to congestion on the road.
Police officials claimed that the aim behind the move was to ease the flow of traffic.
“Initially, the bus bays have been created at two places. However, if required, these will be created at other parts of the city as well,” said a police official.
The UT traffic police have taken various initiatives to manage traffic in the recent past.
The cops have placed drums, which would act as a roundabout, at various points in the city. The drums, which had been painted white, had been placed at the Sector 51-A and D intersection and the Sector 50-A and D crossing.
Similarly, the traffic police had recently placed cones near intersections and light points to give free way to traffic moving towards left.
The cones were placed at the Poultry Farm Chowk, Iron Market Chowk, New Barricade Chowk, Sector 2/3/10/11 Chowk, Old Barricade Chowk, Batra Chowk, Press light point, Sector 16/17 light point and Sector 25/38 intersection to ensure there is no traffic congestion on the roads.
