Patiala: A science, arts and crafts exhibition was organised at Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, SST Nagar, Patiala, on Saturday. In the exhibition, students presented a variety of innovative models that were appreciated by one and all. The exhibition was inaugurated by Jagjit Singh Dardi, Jaswinder Kaur Dardi and Dr Inderpreet Kaur. Dr Kanwaljit Kaur appreciated the talent of students and praised them for their outstanding scientific creations. Around 150 models were displayed on the occasion. Working models on solar system, wind energy, water harvesting, city life, pollution, model of earth, vacuum cleaner and electric broom were great attraction. The students also showed their creativity in arts by making outstanding paintings of different art forms. They also made paintings and craft objects by using waste materials. Among them, the model of Golden Temple made by head girl Rupali Mehra was an outstanding work of art and was highly appreciated by all. The key objective of organising the event was to boost up the hidden talent of students. TNS

Swine flu claims third life in city 

Chandigarh: A 35-year-old man from Hamirpur in HP died of swine flu on Friday. He was brought to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on July 20. Swine flue has claimed three lives in the city hospitals. On July 26, a 60-year-old woman from Maloya became the second victim of the flu. The first victim was Sham Verma (42), a resident of Sector 37. He died at the PGI on July 20. The patient had travelled to Mukerian and Pathankot. He had been on ventilator since he was admitted to the hospital. The PGI authorities said only one patient had been admitted to the isolation ward so far. Dr Gaurav Aggarwal, nodal officer of the UT Health Department, said there was no swine flu patient at the Government Multi Speciality Hospital, Sector 16. TNS

Man found dead on road

Chandigarh: A 50-year-old resident of Majdoor Colony, Kajheri, was found dead near the Attawa chowk on Friday night. The police suspect he died of brain haemorrhage. The PCR received a call at midnight that a man was found lying near the fish market in Sector 43. The police reached the spot and rushed him to the PGI where the doctors declared him dead on arrival. He has been identified as Subhash. The police are waiting for post-mortem report to know the exact cause of his death. TNS

Body found on rail track

Zirakpur: A man was killed after being hit by a train on the Ambala-Kalka railway line on Friday night. Sources in the GRP said they got information that a body was lying near the railway track. A GRP team rushed to the spot and took the body in their custody.  The sources said the deceased seemed to be in mid-40s. It was suspected that he was killed while crossing the railway line.  The body has been kept in the mortuary of Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for identification. OC

P’kula resident held with pistol 

Chandigarh: A resident of Sector 26, Panchkula, was arrested near Kishangarh with a pistol and live cartridges.Amit Kumar, alias Shibu, was arrested from near a government school in Kishangarh. A case has been registered. TNS

Man arrested with ganja

Chandigarh: The police have arrested a Mani Majra resident with 1-kg ganja. The accused has been identified as Deepak Rawat, a resident of NAC, Mani Majra. TNS

Three drug peddlers held

Chandigarh: The police have arrested three persons with banned injections and drugs. The accused has been identified as Suraj Ali, alias Raju Khan, a resident of Bathinda. He had 260-gm opium.  Ashok Kumar,  a resident of Jujhar Nagar village, Mohali, was held with 26 injections, while Gurdev Singh, a  resident of Ambala City, was nabbed with 150 injections. TNS

One booked for fraud

Fatehgarh Sahib: The local police have booked a person for defrauding another person of Rs 5.5 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Canada. SHO Kanwaljit Singh said Harmanjot Singh, a resident of Kotla Fazil village, complained that Harpreet Singh of the same village had taken Rs 5.5 lakh from him to send him to Canada. But neither he could sent him to Canada nor returned the money. Harmanjot said he had taken a loan after mortgaging his agriculture land. When Harpreet failed to send him abroad, he demanded his money back but the accused told him that new ticket would be issued as the earlier ticket was cancelled by the airlines. TNS 

Thefts: Man nabbed

Ropar: After Arresting a resident of Sadavrat area here, the district police have claimed of solving several theft cases. The accused has been identified as Hanbans Singh, alias Bansa. SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said Bansa with his brother Balbir Singh had committed many thefts in area recently. Balbir was yet to be arrested, he said. The SSP said both stole 14 costly mobile phones and cash from a shop in Ghanaulu village on June 30. On June 28, they stole clothes from a shop near Gurdwara Bhatha Sahib. He said while mobile phones and clothes had been recovered from them, more theft cases were likely to be solved after further investigation. TNS

Vanamahotsava observed 

Chandigarh: The Resident Welfare Association of HIG flats in Sector 47-C observed Vanamahotsava and held a tree plantation drive. Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Santosh Kumar was the chief guest on this occasion. The drive was inaugurated with the plantation of palash, the state flower of the UT. Area councillor Davesh Moudgil also joined the plantation drive. Later, area residents were gifted medicinal plants. Ritu Gandotra, organising secretary of the Resident Welfare Association, said 200 medicinal plants were distributed among residents on this occasion. TNS 

430 MT of waste processed

Chandigarh: The Jaypee garbage processing plant on Saturday processed 430 metric tonnes (MT) of garbage. Col KJS Sandhu (retd), plant in-charge, Jaypee Group, said they were complying with directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and today they took 430 MT of garbage for processing.  The NGT had directed JP Associates to process waste up to 450 metric tonnes (MT) in its plant at Dadu Majra every day. The National Green Tribunal, in its order, had stated that in case the plant failed to process the waste, they would have to pay Rs 50,000 per day as compensation after one month.  The firm was told to set up a compost plant within three months. The company was asked to rectify the deficiencies in the RDF plant within four weeks. The MC and JP Associates had been at loggerheads for long as the latter was not processing the waste, forcing the MC to throw it at the dumping ground. TNS

Mani Majra bakeries raided 

Chandigarh: Under the supervision of  SDM Dr Shilpi Patter Dutt,  a team of the Food Safety Department raided bakeries in Mani Majra, Chandigarh, on Saturday. During the drive, six illegal bakeries  were  raided at Shanti  Nagar,  Mani Majra.  Sources  said 4.5  quintals of the  food  items were  seized.     Challans  have been issued to their owners for running these without an FSSAI licence. In addition to this, samples were taken of maida and other items used for the preparation of mathis. The samples were sent to a lab. TNS

Mauli Jagran man duped of Rs 37,000 

Chandigarh:  Two persons duped a Mauli Jagran resident of Rs 37,000 in Sector 26 on Saturday. Complainant Ravinder Kumar said he had gone to the SBI to deposit Rs 37,000, where two unidentified persons met him and told him that they had an amount of Rs 1 lakh, which he could deposit in his account and give them cash in return. Kumar gave them the cash. Later, he realised that he had been duped.  TNS
