Chandigarh, January 4

Owing to a shortage in the supply, the cost of peas shot up from Rs 40 per kg yesterday to Rs 60 per kg today in the city markets. Triggered by poor visibility in the evening due to fog as well as consistent rainfall, the shortage in the supply from Punjab’s agricultural belt has resulted in a sudden hike in the cost of peas, said suppliers.

The cost of basic vegetables such as onion and potato and other green vegetables, however, has remained unaffected so far. “There could be an overall increase in the prices of seasonal vegetables if similar weather conditions prevail for the day or two,” said an official from the UT Market Committee, Sector 26.

“There was a huge shortage of peas in mandis and small vegetable markets across the city today. The supply usually reaches the city late in the evening, but the transit is being affected due to bad weather conditions, especially in the Hoshiarpur belt from where our supply of peas comes,” he said.
