The government on Tuesday upgraded the food grain estimate for 2016-17 from 271.98 million tonne (MT) to 273.38 million tonne in its third estimate, predicting a record production of major crops, including wheat, rice, pulses and coarse cereals.

Attributing the record production of food grains to a ‘very good’ rainfall during the 2016 monsoon and policy initiatives taken by it, the Agriculture Ministry said the production was estimated at 273.38 MT—higher by 8.34 MT (3.15 per cent) over the previous record of 265.04 MT achieved during 2013-14.
