Wheat crop on almost 25 acres of land was burnt to ashes at Atlaa Kalan in Mansa district here today. Stubble on adjoining 16 acres of fields was also engulfed in the fire. By the time the fire brigade reached the fields, the farmers and residents from nearby areas had already controlled the blaze.

Sources said the fire engulfed wheat crop on five-acre land of Mitthu Singh, six-acre land of Balwinder Singh, three-acre land of Gurcharan Singh, two acres of Mehna Singh and three acres of Jasvir Singh. Stubble left in the fields of Karnail Singh, Ajaib Singh, Jasvir Singh and Karam Singh to use as fodder was also burnt.

While the reason behind the outbreak of the fire was yet to be ascertained, members of the Jamhuri Kisan Sabha, Sukhdev Singh, Amrik Singh and Magghar Singh demanded that the district administration must conduct girdawri of the fields on which the wheat crop was destroyed and the farmers be given compensation for the same.
