Bathinda's Rose Garden set for overhaul

Rose garden is set for an overhaul as the Municipal Corporation has included three proposals in the agenda of the F&CC meeting scheduled to be held on July 9.

The proposals are upgrading of the canteen at a cost of Rs45 lakh, construction of a library for Rs41.26 lakh and construction of a home for senior citizens and a toilet block at a cost of Rs29 lakh at Rose garden.

Other proposals which have been given a nod in the general house meeting, and for which contracts will be awarded soon are waterfall along with signboard and water coolers at a cost of Rs24 lakh, installation of decorative lights for Rs61 lakh, popup sprinkler system involving a cost of Rs3.90 lakh, beautification of the garden for Rs16.64 lakh, fixing of popup system and benches for Rs24.80 lakh and installation of a fountain at a cost of Rs24.50 lakh.

In 2017, the MCB had planned to have a mini-science city at the garden, but it could not see the light of day, though the MC had also prepared a proposal and tabled it in the General House meeting.

A subcommittee under the chairmanship of deputy mayor Gurinderpal Kaur Mangat was constituted for the project, but members had no information regarding the constitution of the subcommittee, due to which no meeting was convened over the project. Later, the MCB cancelled the project.

Rose Garden is the most frequented part of the city and a major tourist attraction for residents of the city and nearby towns.

A large number of morning walkers come to the Rose Garden daily. The park gets crowded in the evening as residents bring their children for recreation.

The Rose Garden was in want of an upgrade for a long time. Residents are happy that the MCB has turned its attention towards this spot at last.

The garden had come into existence in 1979 and the responsibility its maintenance and upkeep of lies with the Municipal Corporation.
