Congress candidate Jagroop Singh Gill continued his winning streak for the sixth time after winning by a margin of 1,414 votes from Ward No. 48. He had contested the civic body polls for the first time in 1979.

Residents of the area near Thandi Sarak and Parasram Nagar said the veteran Congress leader had always maintained a rapport with the residents, which led to his victory every time he contested.

Elected as a councillor for the first time in 1979, Jagroop again won in 1992, 1997, 2007 and now in 2015. He had also held the posts of the Chairman of the Improvement Trust, vice-president and president of the civic body and the president of the District Bar Association (DBA) in the past.

His supporters said Gill not only helped people in getting their work done but also remained vocal at MC House meetings. Among other candidates who emerged victorious, former Mayor Baljeet Singh Beerbehman, Santosh Mahant, Harmandar Singh, Raju Sra and Ram Halwai are prominent.

The Independent had an impressive show as compared to the previous elections. The BJP’s tally also came down from 14 to 8 while SAD came down to 21 from 24.
