Farmers attend awareness camp on drip irrigation

BATHINDA: A oneday awareness campcumfield day on drip irrigation was organised on Thursday at Punjab Agricultural Universitys PAU Regional Research Station Bathinda Jodhpur Farm under IndoIsrael project Centre of Excellence for utilisation of Brackish Water for fruits and vegetables production in South Western Punjab in collaboration with department of soil science PAU Ludhiana

A one-day awareness camp-cum-field day on drip irrigation was organised on Thursday at Punjab Agricultural University’s (PAU) Regional Research Station, Bathinda (Jodhpur Farm), under Indo-Israel project ‘Centre of Excellence for utilisation of Brackish Water for fruits and vegetables production in South Western Punjab’ in collaboration with department of soil science, PAU, Ludhiana. The programme was attended by more than 150 farmers from different villages of Bathinda district. Dr NS Bains, Director of Research, PAU, Ludhiana, was the chief guest of the programme. The programme was initiated by welcome address of Dr Jatinder Singh, Associate Director, KVK, Bathinda.

Dr GS Buttar, additional director of extension education, PAU, Ludhiana, interacted which farmers and gave them detailed information about benefits and importance of drip fertigation system for the Southwest Punjab Region, especially for the vegetable and fruit crops. He also speak about the importance of non-burning of paddy straw in the field that save the environment and improve soil health.

Dr Bains in his address advised the farmers to save water and use micro-irrigation systems. He explained that how drip irrigation as well as fertigation improve the quality of water and health of soil which ultimately increase production and productivity of crops. Dr Bains also appealed the farmers to keep in touch with university scientists for reaping the benefits of new technologies including micro-irrigation systems. 

The experts dwelled on different aspects of cotton vegetable and horticultural crops using micro-irrigation system.
