Amritsar, October 19
Amritsar-born Shammi Rana has been appointed new secretary-general of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG).
Rana said the ICTSG would help all concerned and interested governments and non-government national, international and regional organisations in the harmonisation and coordination of efforts to provide guidance and counseling and to sustain 17 programmes pertaining to traditional sports and games (TSG).
Rama demanded that TSG must be presented at local, national and regional international events with high publicity to strengthen awareness of their values and significance.
TSG should be incorporated, introduced and promoted in the work of schools, communities, institutions, and organisations, both governmental and non-governmental, he said.
Rana has over 20 years of experience in promoting sports. TSG contributes to a life of mutual understanding and peaceful behaviour among various cultural and social groups, communities and nations. They are means of their identity. Therefore, the significance of TSG must be strengthened and opportunities for practising them must be open for all human beings, he said.
Rana said those traditional games which do not need expensive facilities and equipment should be promoted, especially where the resources are limited.
