Dr Kulwant Singh Ded, professor, Department of Surgery, Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SGRD), took over as the founder vice-chancellor of the newly-declared Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, here today.

Dr Ded is an eminent paediatrics surgeon. He joined the office in the presence of chancellor of the university and president, SGPC, Avtar Singh Makkar.

Addressing faculty members on the occasion, Avtar Singh said the elevation of the institution into a university would open new horizons in the field of academics and research work. He added that Dr Kulwant Singh Ded had been selected after hard deliberations so that the university was made a premier medical education institute in the region.

Dr Ded said he would put his best to prove that the faith of the SGRD trust and panel in him was well deserved. He asked the faculty members to cooperate with him in running the university.

After the installation ceremony, Makkar, along with Ded and other faculty members, inaugurated the new state-of-the-art Cath lab at the hospital.

Makkar said the Cath lab had been started with the view to provide subsidised angiography, angioplasty, pacemaker, BMW, AICD and CRTD to heart patients.
