Various organisations held functions to observe Martyrdom Day of Mahatma Gandhi here today. In a function organised by the district administration at Jallianwala Bagh here today, senior BJP leader and former minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla said, “The country needs to learn lessons from the life of Mahatma Gandhi.”

She said the path of non-violence and truth shown by Gandhiji was still the righteous path. Youngsters must lead their life as per the teachings of the father of nation, she added. Additional Deputy Commissioner Bhupinder Singh and other officials of the administration were present on the occasion.

People from all walks of life paid floral tributes at the memorials of freedom fighters at Jallianwala Bagh on the occasion. A contingent of the Punjab Police paid homage to the Mahatma by reversing their weapons.

In another function, National Scheduled Caste Commission vice-chairman Raj Kumar Verka paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding his statute at Company Bagh. He said there was a need to make the younger generation aware about the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi in attaining freedom for the country.
