GNDU MSc results spark confusion among students

Students of MSc (Mathematics) in the city are a harried lot after the declaration of their first semester results by Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). The result has sparked confusion among them as they are not clear about the grace marks granted by the university as a compensation for a missing section in the exam held on December 2.

According to information, the question paper comprised of just four sections instead of five. A section of certain portion of ‘complex analysis’ was missing. According to the system, five sections of 20 marks each are to be attempted by the students. The students were informed that they would be compensated for the same. “There has to be the mention of grace marks on the detailed mark sheet. Even if there some other arrangement, we must be informed,” said Natasha Batra, a student.

Rabia Arora, another student, said, “This is disappointing. Nothing has been communicated to us about the marking scheme. I feel that they have evaluated the entire answer sheet considering it to be a 100-mark paper.”

However, there are a few marksheets where grace pointers along with the marks scored have been mentioned in the footnote giving way to more confusion. “Students are confused. They are also not happy with the way the papers have been marked. Even the toppers of the subject have scored low in my class and there is zero clarity on the grace marks or the kind of adjustment made,” said a head of the mathematics department of a local college, requesting anonymity.

When contacted, Prof Dr Manoj Kumar, in-charge, Examination, Guru Nanak Dev University, said, “There is no need for the students to get confused. Grace marks have been given in accordance with the rules for that particular section. For students having confusion regarding the grace marks pointer mentioned on their mark sheets, it points towards the grace marks given to the student, in case he or she fails in a subject. The university is fair in its approach towards every student.”
