750 awarded degrees at govt college

Amritsar: As many as 750 graduate and postgraduate students of humanities, science and commerce streams of SR Government College for Women were awarded degrees during the 45th annual convocation here today. Shwet Malik, Member of Rajya Sabha, who was the chief guest on the occasion, gave away degrees to students. Principal Sunita Sehgal Dhillon welcomed guests and presented annual report of the college highlighting future proposals in the era of globalisation and achievements in the field of academics, co-curricular and sports. She apprised the gathering about institution’s heritage of over 80 years and as the only government college for girls in the region. She said, “College alumni like Dr Kiran Bedi, IPS officer; Ritu Kumar, designer; Deepti Naval, actor; Neelam Mansingh, theatre personality; and more recently Dr Amrinder Kaur, IFS, the first women officer of India to head the Forest Department of state (Haryana) are testimony to the institutes commitment towards excellence and women empowerment.” In his address, chief guest Shwet Malik urged the young graduates to be aware of their rights and duties. He appreciated achievements of the college and congratulated the Principal for her commitment towards quality education. He promised a grant of Rs 10 lakh to the college to upgrade the civic and utility infrastructure. The function ended with colourful programme highlighting the blend of traditional culture and modernity.

Annual function at Ram Ashram School

Class IV students of Shri Ram Ashram Public School organised an annual function here today. The event was based on theme ‘Colours’. Shwet Malik, Member of Rajya Sabha, was the chief guest on the occasion. He was welcomed by school society president Balbir Bajaj, manager and educational advisor SN Joshi and Principal Vinodita Sankhyan. The event commenced with the lighting of the inaugural lamp. Students presented a colourful, vibrant and energetic music programme and danced on the beat of the drum, which left the audience spell bound.

Volleyball tourney at DAV public School

Students of Class XII competed for the trophy in the Intramural Volleyball Tournament here on Friday. The Sports Department of DAV Public School organised volley ball matches to inculcate qualities of leadership, cooperation, discipline, fair play and team spirit. Much excitement was seen among students, who gave their best performance and kept the spirit of the game high. The students were divided into four teams.

Lecture on ‘Paash’ at BBK DAV College

The Department of Punjabi of BBK DAV College for Women organized a lecture on the revolutionary Punjabi poet ‘Paash’. Dr Parminder Singh, former Head, Department of English, Guru Nanak Dev University, was the keynote speaker for the event.

Addressing students, Dr Parminder said ‘Paash’ was a pioneer in questioning the authoritative and undemocratic setup of the Indian political system. He said, “His poems give an insight into revolutionary thought process, cultural phenomenon and economical inequality of Punjabi society.” While addressing the audience, Dr Parminder said due to his Naxalite ideology, Paash had to spend a long time of his life in jail. — TNS
