Acquiring land for Katra Expressway tough task for the administration

Acquiring land for the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is no easy task for the administration in Khadoor Sahib sub-division of Tarn Taran district for which it has been making efforts for more than a year now. The efforts of the administration have borne no fruit as per the expectations till date. The district administration said that land in 21 villages of Tarn Taran sub-division has been acquired while land acquisition in Khadoor Sahib sub-division is in process. The administration was facing great resentment from the farmers in this sub-division. The administration said that the process to acquire 239.51 hectare (22.75 km) of land in 19 villages is in progress. In this sub-division, only 2.5 km of land in Fatehbad and Khawaspur villages has been acquired and the possession of the land has been given to the NHAI. The administration made efforts to take possession of the land a few days back when the farmers of the area opposed the move and the administration had to fall back disappointed. The farmers of the area have been demanding fair compensation for their land. Ravinder Singh Brahampura, former SAD MLA and Chairman of Punjab Rural Development Society has corresponded with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari asking for fair compensation in the Bharatmala Expressway Project. Brahampura has penned a letter shedding light on the urgent matter of land compensation disparities within the Bharatmala project for the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway in Khadoor Sahib, (Punjab). The Expressway is to pass through the villages of Tarn Taran and Khadoor Sahib sub-division of the district. From the farmers of Tarn Taran sub-division, the administration was facing no trouble. Brahmpura, in his letter to the Union Minister, emphasised on the issue of unequal compensation allocated to Jhander Mahapurkhan village in comparison to neighbouring areas, raising critical questions regarding fair treatment to landowners and farmers in the area. He said that this village faces the acquisition of 72 acres of land for the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway project, an area crucial for industrial development, hosting major companies such as Nerolac Paint and others. The disparity in compensation received by Jhander Mahapurkhan village has created uncertainty and hardships for local landowners and farmers. He advocated the creation of job opportunities for one member of each affected farmer’s family, recognising agriculture as their primary source of livelihood. The initiative aims to safeguard the well-being and financial stability of the impacted families. There are other villages like Dhunda, Goindwal Sahib, Khakh, Hansawala, Akbarpura, Kang, Ghasitpur, Mandila, Dulchipur, Dinewal, Ekal Gadda and Bharowal where the administration was facing trouble in acquiring land. Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kumar said that compensation of Rs 138 crore had been distributed among the farmers whose land has been acquired for the project. In total, the administration is facing a tough situation in acquiring the land in Khadoor Sahib sub-division. — Gurbaxpuri
