Taking up the cause of women safety, FICCI FLO, Amritsar chapter, has tied up with several colleges and institutions to initiate workshops on teaching self-defense to girls. The organisation will also promote the “Shakti” app, a mobile-based application for women safety launched by city police.

Informing about the programme, Arushi Verma, vice-chairperson, FICCI FLO, said, “It is imperative that required steps are taken to ensure women safety in city at all times. With rising incidents of crimes against women, the programme to teach self-defence to girls become pertinent.” The organisation recently held a workshop on Krav Maga, an Israeli martial arts form, in association with city police department.

The organisation is also working in association with Make Women Safe initiative by Gurgaon-based NGO. “We will also educate the women and girls enrolled with us about the Shakti mobile application. If such a service is being provided by the police for women safety one should definitely know about it,” she said.

The Shakti application can be downloaded on any Android phone. It has  panic button linked with the police control room and some phone numbers of family members, which can be tracked in case of stalking or any unruly  incident. The bilingual app, available in both English and Punjabi, will also help the police in identifying persons with criminal intent with the help of the people who could click their pictures and send to the police for verification and further necessary action.— TNS
