Tarn Taran, July 27

High drama prevailed at the roadways workshop here on Saturday as two leaders of the employees’ union entered into a brawl. The employees tossed turbans and rained blows on their opponents until they were overpowered by onlookers.

The tussle started when the driver of a bus bound for Sri Goindwal Sahib opted for a conductor of his choice. The brawl was between two employee union leaders protesting against the state government for the regularisation of services of contractual employees. As the brawl continued for about an hour, the bus missed its timing resulting in harassment for the passengers. An official of the roadways called the police which failed to turn up.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, an official of the roadways said that the driver of the bus who was also a leader of the union wanted to take a conductor of his choice to take advantage of ticket-less travelling by passengers. He said it was a major source of their income as the meagre salary being given to them by the roadways was not sufficient to meet their domestic expenditure.

When contacted, General Manager of the depot, Jaswinder Singh Chahal said he has already received information about the incident by the Duty Inspector and the matter would be inquired into and action taken accordingly.
