The work of repairing the 300m stretch of a service road of National Highway No.54 near Chutala village here has been stalled for over the last one and a half months, causing inconvenience to commuters. The repair work on the road stretch, which was totally damaged, had been started just three months ago when residents of nearby areas came out on roads to register their protest against the administration and the NH authorities.

Work to be resumed after the rainy season: Official

  • The leader of the farmers’ union said four months ago, area residents had staged a dharna near the Usman (village) toll plaza and made the passage of vehicles ‘free’ at the toll plaza in protest.
  • Ashu, consultant of the national highway, when asked about the latest position of the repair work, said due to the rainy season the work has been stopped and it would resume after the rainy season.

Sawinder Singh Chutala, state leader of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, said here on Friday that the road stretch had been lying damaged for over the last four years as the overflowing water from the roadside drain remained stagnant on the road for years, but the administration did nothing in this regard. Even area residents had brought the matter to the notice of the administration many times but to no avail.

Farmer leader Sawinder Singh Chutala said residents would have to wait for months for the road to be repaired. The service road, closed to heavy vehicles, has not been opened as yet as there are many deep pits in the middle of the road.
