Road repair work leads to traffic jams in Amritsar

Amritsar, February 14
A massive traffic jam for hours together in the afternoon today choked the flow of vehicles on the GT Road from the Tara Wala Pul up to the ISBT.
The reason for the traffic snarl was the road repair work being carried out on the elevated road. Ahead of the G-20 summit, several roads are being repaired leading to severe traffic jams in and around those places.
Work coincides with peak traffic hours
The traffic rush was more as the civil work coincided with the peak traffic hours of 1 pm to 4 pm when school vehicles come on roads. Amandeep Kaur, ADCP (Traffic)
Mohan Singh, a retired professor of Khalsa College, said thousands of commuters had to undergo the nightmare of driving on a jam-packed road. He suggested that the traffic police must adopt modern measures to reduce the harassment of common people and tourists visiting the holy city. He said the government must release a traffic bulletin daily informing the public which road was to undergo repair so that they could adjust their routes accordingly.
Rishabh, who commutes daily on the Airport road for his office work, said the road patching work was carried out at Gumtala bypass yesterday. It led to a massive traffic jam. A similar situation persisted today at intersections as the carpeting work was in progress. He said a large number of people who were to catch flights and were trying to reach well in time were affected.
Choking of two relatively prominent long stretches spilled over the traffic to adjoining roads. It created a kind of mayhem as vehicles caught in the traffic quagmire kept honking.
Amandeep Kaur, ADCP (Traffic), said she took up the matter of carrying out the patchwork at night to save people from the traffic hassles with the Municipal Corporation officials. However, they expressed helplessness as the temperature required for tarcoal was conducive in the afternoon. She said the traffic rush was more as the civil work coincided with the peak traffic hours of 1 pm to 4 pm when school vehicles come on roads.
