Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria emphasised the need for a viable alternative to stubble burning, alongside stringent measures to curb the practice harming the environment and public health.

During his four-day visit to the state’s border areas, Kataria visited the Attari-Wagah joint check post and witnessed the flag-lowering ceremony. He suggested that Punjab needs an industry utilising crop residue as fuel or raw material for processing.

The state has reported over 5,500 farm fire cases so far, with 1,440 cases in the past 10 days. The Supreme Court has sought explanations from Punjab and Haryana governments regarding the surge.
