The SGPC today shot off a communiqué to the Chief Election Commissioner of the state, seeking postponement of the civic body elections to January next year, instead of holding it in December.

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami reasoned that the second half of December was of great importance in Sikh history as four sons (Sahibzaade) of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru, Mata Gujari and other Sikhs were martyred during this period. The Sikh community refrains from holding any celebration during this period, he added.

Meanwhile, the SGPC has started the process of accepting passports from the devotees who are interested in visiting historic Gurdhams in Pakistan on Khalsa Sajna Day (Baisakhi) in April next year. Devotees can submit their passports along with a photocopy of Aadhaar card or voter card as proof of their identity at the SGPC office till December 25. — TNS
