Amritsar, August 20

A police post would be set up in emergency area of Guru Nanak Dev Hospital here. This was stated by MLA Dr Ajay Gupta during a visit to Government Medical College here on Tuesday. The administration would also set up a 24-hour CCTV surveillance room, install panic buttons, depute women guards, constitute a quick response team and increase the number of security guards, he said.

Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Ghansham Thori, Commissioner of Police Ranjit Singh Dhillon and other officials of the administration, MLA Gupta was here to interact with doctors regarding their security concerns. The resident doctors are protesting in the college against the government after the rape and murder of a doctor at a medical college in Kolkata.

The MLA claimed that the Commissioner of Police has assured them of deputing two policemen at the emergency block at all times. PCR vehicles would also increase vigilance in the campus. Panic buttons would be installed at work stations, which would directly send an alarm to the nearest police station that would have the responsibility to respond to the emergency immediately.

Gupta said though CCTV cameras have been installed on the premises, a control room for 24-hour surveillance of the camera feed would be made functional soon.

“The government is concerned about the security of medical professionals and the change would be visible within the next two weeks,” he claimed. He asked the resident doctors to end their protest as the government is considering fulfilling all their demands regarding security.

The MLA said women security guards would be deputed at the hospital as a large number of employees are women. He asked the hospital management to display telephone numbers of senior police and civil administration officials at all places on the premises so that doctors and other employees can directly report any issue to them.

The MLA said hospital management should ensure that all entrance gates except one are closed at night. He suggested that one attendant of every patient should be issued a card so that no unauthorised person could gain entry to the premises after the closing of OPDs.
