Panic gripped residents and staffers inside the GNDU campus as a suspected case was reported at the university here on Saturday. A student, who had returned from Karnataka recently and was currently staying in a hostel on the campus, came to the university health centre with symptoms of flu.
“An international student with a recent travel history to Karnataka had come to the health centre with symptoms of cough and fever on Friday evening. A team of health officials from GNDU took him to Government Medical College for a thorough check-up where it was found that he had no symptoms of Covid-19. For further precautions, we have kept him in isolation for observation at the health centre and he was found to be recovering,” said Prof KS Kahlon, registrar, GNDU. A research scholar, the student has been studying in the university for the last six months.
As soon as the news spread, several employees left their offices based inside the campus and residents stayed indoors. Kahlon said the university was well prepared to tackle any such situation. “We are prepared and our medical officers are able to deal with any eventuality. The health centre is well equipped. We are following the government advisory on the matter,” he said.
Meanwhile, other research scholars have left the campus after an order was issued by the Dean, Students Welfare, on Thursday. They were the last ones to leave after the campus shut down owing to the advisory issued by the Government of India and the state government.
