Panic erupts in city after assassination bid on former Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal
As the news of assassination attempt on former Deputy Chief Minister (CM) and senior Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance gate of the Golden Temple on the Ghanta Ghar side spread, a panic like situation erupted within the holy city that would be hosting two vital events in the coming days.
A three-day eighth national convention of “Sahakar Bharati” would be inaugurated on Friday in which Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, besides Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini would be participating.
Apart from them, senior RSS functionaries, including Dattatreya Hosabale, Sarkaryawah (General Secretary), RSS, would also be present during the programme. Minister of State for Cooperation, Government of India, has also been invited on the occasion.
At least 3,000 delegates of various cooperative societies in 650 cities across the country will attend the event.
Shankar Tiwari, one of the event organisers, said, “The police have assured adequate security arrangements as a number of VVIPs and national-level leaders will be attending the programme.”
The second prominent event Punjab International Trade Expo-2024 (PITEX-2024) will commence from tomorrow on the Ranjit Avenue ground.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said, “Already adequate arrangements have been made for providing security at the venues of the two events. Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police (ADCPs) and Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) have been briefed about safety and security arrangements at both the venues.”
DCP Alam Vijay Singh and ADCP Vishaljit Singh today visited the Railway B-block ground where “Sahakar Bharati” national convention would be held. They supervised the security arrangements and also interacted with the event organisers.
A senior police official wishing not to be named said though incident at the Golden Temple would not have any impact on the overall law and order situation, the Punjab Police did not want to leave any stone unturned in view of the arrival of national-level dignitaries and VVIPs at the two prominent events.
Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped in an assassination attempt when former Khalistani militant Narain Singh Chaura shot at him at the entrance gate of the Golden Temple on the Ghanta Ghar side where he was undergoing “Tankhah” (religious punishment).
