The Amritsar North Assembly constituency MLA, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, inspected waterlogged streets in the Mustafabad area and heard issues of the public here yesterday. Residents alleged that the Municipal Commissioner did not respond to their phone calls, so they decided to visit his residence along with other members of the public.

Residents of Tower Wali Gali, Mustafabad, have been complaining to the MC officials for the last 15 days about the overflow of sewage in their area. They alleged that despite repeated complaints, the MC failed to address the issue. The residents spoke to Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh when he visited the area to hear their grievances.

Gagandeep Singh, owner of a garment shop in the area, said, “Sewer water accumulated in front of my shop. Customers have to wade through stinky water to enter my shop. So, no one has come in the last one month at my shop. I am the sole earning member of my family. I have earned nothing for the last several days due to waterlogging in the street.”

Residents claimed that the MC workers had visited the area several times along with machines, but failed to address the waterlogging issue.

Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said, “Sewer water has overflowed in streets, entered houses and even kitchens in Tower Wali Gali of Mustafabad. The Amritsar Municipal Corporation has totally failed to solve the issue despite repeated reminders. The Municipal Commissioner and his staff are not attending calls from the public.” He further said, “I spoke to the Minister of Local Bodies to take immediate remedial measures. I am going to write to the Punjab Chief Secretary to take action against officials concerned and depute a team of experts to take stock of the situation.”

Even a day after the MLA’s visit, the situation did not changed. The sewer water was still accumulated in streets. Residents were forced to wade through the stinky water to get out of their houses.
