Even as the police await reports regarding the explosives used in the suspected IED found dumped outside the Ajnala police station here on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, investigations carried out so far pointed towards the involvement of a foreign-based gangster-turned-terrorist’s role behind the incident.

They wanted to target the Ajnala police station. However, the IED did not explode averting a major tragedy.

Though the police were still silent over any further development in the case, sources in the Amritsar Rural Police said the explosive attached to the IED was apparently RDX, which was used during militancy days by terrorists in Punjab.

The police have been investigating the role of US-based notorious gangster Harpreet Singh, aka Happy Pashia, along with his accomplice Gopi Nawansharia in the case. Pashia was allegedly behind the recent Chandigarh hand grenade attack.

After examining the footage of the CCTV cameras installed near the police station, two bike-borne youths were seen dumping a plastic bag with the explosives near the Ajnala police station’s wall. One of them remained on the bike, the other person dumped the suspected bomb near the wall.

“We have been carrying out investigations from every possible angle, including of foreign based handlers’ role in dumping the suspected IED,” said Amritsar Rural Police SSP Charanjit Singh, adding that the report of the explosive material attached with the IED was yet to arrive.

According to the sources, there was a ball-like object a bit bigger than a cricket ball weighing around 700 grams with a wiring mechanism attached to it in the plastic bag. “We cannot rule out the presence of RDX until we have the forensic lab report with us,” said an official privy to the investigations.

After the terror-sponsored RPG attack at the Punjab police intelligence headquarters in Mohali and at the Sarhali police station in Tarn Taran perpetrated by gangsters-turned-terrorists based in foreign countries, the police were taking the incident seriously.
