GNDU celebrates 55th Foundation Day with fervour
The 55th Foundation Day of Guru Nanak Dev University was marked by a significant gathering of academicians, scholars, students and eminent personalities who highlighted the relevance of Guru Nanak Dev’s teachings in addressing global issues faced by humanity. The event, held without the presence of the Vice Chancellor due to the completion of Prof Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu’s term, was enriched with a series of cultural, academic and spiritual activities.
Dr Rajesh Gill, a retired professor from Panjab University, said the university’s foundation day coincided with the 555th Parkash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev, from whom the university draws its name. She apprised the participants of the extraordinary foresight of Guru Nanak. She pointed out that his teachings, which emphasised equality, respect for women and the rejection of superstition, remain highly relevant even in the 21st century.
Dr Ravi Ravinder from the University of Delhi celebrated the enduring richness of Punjabi culture, which is deeply rooted in the values promoted by Guru Nanak. However, he also pointed out the challenges facing the culture today, such as extremism, migration, casteism and the erosion of traditional values.
Dr Amarjit Singh, Director of the Centre on Studies in Sri Guru Granth Sahib at Guru Nanak Dev University, emphasised the Guru’s universal message of unity, spiritual growth and the selfless principle of ‘Sewa’ (service).
Earlier, the day-long celebrations began with the Bhog Sri Akhand Path at the University Gurdwara followed by kirtan. A Deepmala lighting ceremony on the campus was also organised. Exhibitions showcasing folklore, paintings, and books were also organised.
