Footpath encroachments rampant in city markets, pedestrians suffer
Residents of the city are concerned over unchecked encroachments on footpaths by shopkeepers and vendors, leaving pedestrians with no choice but to walk on roads. This has resulted in a significant number of road accidents, with a large number of pedestrians being hit by vehicles every year.
City markets like Hall Bazaar, Katra Jaimal Singh, Katra Sher Singh, Rambagh, Majitha Road, Batala Road, Lawrence Road, Mall Road, Queens Road, Sultanwind Road, Chamrang Road, Tarn Taran Road, Ranjit Avenue, etc, witness rampant encroachments. The Hall Road, where authorities spent crores on beautifying the footpaths, are being encroached upon by shopkeepers to display the goods. On the other hand, tourists and visitors are forced to walk on roads.
“It’s like courting risk while walking on roads,” said Rohan, a local resident, Rohan. “The footpaths are blocked and we are forced to walk on roads with speeding vehicles passing by,” he added.
Saurab Kumar of Batala Road said, “Authorities concerned seem to be turning a blind eye to the issue. It’s the responsibility of the MC and the police to ensure our safety, but they have failed miserably.” Encroachments have not only caused inconvenience but also pose a threat to the lives of pedestrians, especially elderly persons and children.
“It’s sad to see senior citizens and children walking on the roads, who are more vulnerable to road accidents. Shopkeepers and vendors should be relocated, and the footpaths should be cleared immediately,” said SS Sandhu. Residents are demanding swift action from authorities to address the critical issue and ensure the safety of pedestrians.
“We urge the civic bodies to take strict measures against encroachments and create pedestrian-friendly infrastructure,” said Rajinder Sharma. “Our lives are precious and we need safety while walking on the city’s roads,” he added.
