The protest was held at the sub-division level in front of the offices of the Assistant Registrar, Cooperatives Societies, on Wednesday and a memorandum submitted in the name of the Punjab CM.
Pargat Singh Jamarai, state leader of JKS, said that the activists organised protests in Tarn Taran, Patti and Khadoor Sahib under the leadership of Mukhtar Singh Mallha, Daljit Singh Dialpura and Jhilmil Singh Bania, respectively.
Pargat Singh Jamarai and other leaders, while addressing the protesters, said that the cooperative department which was once the backbone of the rural population, was in an awful condition. He said that most cooperative institutions were facing closure as a number of co-operative sugar mills and spinning mills have shut down. The leaders said that debt-ridden cooperative societies were crying for survival. They said that Wico and Spinfed have shut down and Housefed was not visible on the canvas of cooperative movement. The leaders of the Jamhoori Kisan Sabha said that the products of cooperative institutions have lost their marketing touch due to the prevailing corruption. The union leaders urged on making the cooperative movement free of corruption.
